Balance is a Measure of Longevity

Balance as a measure of longevity

You might have heard us mention this in class lately.  There was a study which resulted in the following statement: Middle-aged and elderly people who cannot balance on one leg for 10 seconds are almost twice as likely to die within 10 years compared to those who can.  So some clarifications are required here.

The study was done with a mix of men and women ranging in age from 51 through 75.  Each was selected for the study because they had a stable gait.  They were tracked from 2008 through 2020.

It was found that balance “tends to be well preserved until the sixth decade of life, when it starts to wane relatively rapidly”.

“The participants were asked to stand on one leg for 10 seconds without any additional support.  They were also instructed to place the front of their free foot on the back of the opposite lower leg while keeping their arms by their sides and their gaze fixed straight ahead.  Three attempts on either foot were allowed.”

The great end of the story is that you can fix this problem.  Regardless of your age, you can work on your balance as a part of your daily activities. Let us know if you want some assistance.  There are videos in the replay library devoted to balance and we also have a 30-day program to improve your balance.

Until next time.
