I was having a discussion with one of the members after class today. She reminded me of something that... that I had been through myself. And that's where you go to a yoga or fitness class where it becomes all about the pose rather than about you.
Early, when I first tried yoga. I had a teacher set on my bottom and cause such severe pain in my knees that I swore I'd never go back.
This was like 30 years ago. She did that trying to help me get into the perfect pose. I've also been to other classes where they try to get you deep into a pose that maybe your body is not ready for.
So in that particular instance, and many, many of your big instructors, the gurus believe that it's about the pose and if you perfect the pose, you'll perfect the person.
We disagree. We feel it's about the person first and the pose will come.
Not everybody can get into the perfect warrior. Not everybody can get into a full child's pose. That's where that one instructor hurt me so terribly, my knees exploded as she tried to force my bottom down to my heels.
To this day, my heels still don't hit my bottom and it doesn't matter. I get amazing benefits from child's pose because I am doing child's pose how it most benefits my body.
That's what I'm going to encourage you to do. When you go to a class, I want you to pay attention to your body, to move how it feels right for your body.
Don't worry about it. If you're in a... say a warrior two. And there's some upbeat music on and your body just wants to move... well don't force yourself into the pose and just stay there. Move! Heavens to Betsy. It's about you.
I will tell you any class you go to, that's more about the pose than you I'd recommend maybe you look for different classes and I'm not saying that to put down any other teachers. There are so many amazing teachers in this world. There's so many amazing leaders in this world, but to me, the best leaders teach you how to listen to your body, how to move correctly for your body. They give you modifications.
Maybe sometimes those modifications they're to make a pose, a position, more intense, and sometimes they're to work around the position.
I truly believe truly, truly, truly believe that perfecting the body will perfect the pose.
Move well, stay healthy, be happy, live with passion, and we will talk to you tomorrow.
