Dave Stevens
Hey, welcome to our first real people fitness broadcast.

Well that's the first time the three of us have been together. I've done some myself. I'm Dave Stevens, one of the owners of RiversZen Fitness along with my wife Peggy and my daughter Kim Gibbs.

So what I want to share today, what we want to share today is what we mean by real people fitness. I think this started years ago when we first opened our studio. We would take walks around Portland, which was the closest big city at the time. We'd look at yoga studios and fitness studios and plastered all over their windows were these pictures of amazing people with ripped six packs and bulging muscles. And all of these unbelievable poses, Gumby Yeah.

We realized that that wasn't what we were wanting to teach people, we want to teach people how to move well stay healthy, and be happy. And that you don't have to be these high end poses and classes to do that, you can do classes. And you of course, you can do that, of course, what we're looking for are people who just want the secrets to moving well for the rest of their life. And boy, once you move well, you stay healthy, and and you get happy. So that's our goal. And so I'm going to kind of just back off a little bit my Peggy and Kim talk a little bit I'll intersperse is something hits my brain Of course, because I can't control myself. That's true. But yeah, so we just wanted to kind of meet you and, and give give an idea of what rivers what real people fitness is all about.

Peggy Stevens
Let's still so many times when we talk to people, it's like, well, I can't do yoga, and it's like, No, you can come to the studio.

Kim Gibbs
It's okay, I don't do yoga either. Exactly.

Peggy Stevens
So we want the person who has been intimidated all these years, the people that were afraid to go to a facility and have everybody in the room in perfect spandex and perfect bodies. When we were going through our training we would have various questions that would come up from our clients and and we would call and call upon our trainers and ask them these questions. They would just look at us and say, Where do you come up with these questions? What kind of clients do you have. that you have these questions? And it's like, we have normal people, we have real people

Kim Gibbs
And we're real people. Let's not forget that. Yes.

Peggy Stevens
If all of if all of your clients are athletes, that's another story. We certainly have had people over the years who are athletes and some people who are more athletic, but more of our members are just normal people.

Dave Stevens
And many of them are broken. Yeah. And we were broken.

Unknown Speaker
I'm broken. I'm still broken. I still have problems. We are sorry. You know, I mean, let's be real. I mean Peggy's got wrist issues -  still she has to modify. I have knee issues I have to modify. We're real people, too. We listen to our bodies just like everyone else. Right? Yeah.

Dave Stevens
And only one of us is perfect.

Kim Gibbs
Oh, I know the dogs are perfect.

Peggy Stevens
That's too. Yeah, well, I

Kim Gibbs
consider them one. They look the same.

Peggy Stevens
That's, that's true. We're all just one injury away from being back to where we started. So that's the whole point, we have learned how to fix things. That's the key is and that's what we're trying to do and help with our clients is to give them the tools to know what to do, when things don't feel good.

Dave Stevens
That's it we want to teach everyone that we work with. That's our mission.

Our mission is teach as many people as possible, how they can move well and stay healthy for the rest of their lives. And you know, we always try and being happy because along with the movie while staying healthy, and guess what happens once you start moving well, you figure out ways to be healthy.

Unknown Speaker
Yeah. mindset is huge. It is some sometimes just thinking that you feel better. It's amazing what your body will do.

Dave Stevens
Oh the think method.

Yes, la dee da dee, da da da da da you have

Kim Gibbs
But they don't want to hear you sing. She gotta keep your day job.

Dave Stevens
You have to watch The Music Man to get that reference. If you have not watched The Music Man, you do not understand the

Peggy Stevens
thing now until you did not quite appreciate David in his dulcet tones. Right. Yeah.

Dave Stevens
That's the minuet in G

Peggy Stevens
Yes, yes. Nevermind.

Unknown Speaker
The main reason we're here is to help you, period. That's it. I mean, we kind of figured it out for ourselves. I will admit that working with all of you, helps us keep improving ourselves, gives us the incentive and forces us to do the classes. That's one thing nice about the live classes. Once you commit to a live class. You kind of feel obligated to go, don't you? Yeah, exactly. So we try to provide classes, every one of our classes, even the "crazy punishers" classes. Hey, did you know we have somebody whose nickname is the Punisher in the studio.

Kim Gibbs
I don't know who that would be.

Dave Stevens
I would neither Kim

Let me thank her.

Peggy Stevens
She's just the sweetest little thing. Oh,

Dave Stevens
Even the punishers classes are designed so anybody can go. She challenges you. But she gives you modifications up and down. And that's what we're all about. We don't want to do a class that's geared for just high end people. We want to do a class that everybody can get benefit from. And that's why we have such a wide array of classes.

What do you have peg anything else?

Peggy Stevens
We also encourage the person who, maybe you've just had surgery, and you're not, you know, you're not ready to really come back to class. That's okay. Come sit in a chair. We have had people sit in a chair, sit on a stability ball, and just be and so they're back in class with their friends, they're listening to music, they're, they're finding what they can do within their bodies, maybe all they're doing is using their arms, maybe they're kicking their legs up a little bit. But they're they're slowly starting to get back into motion. And taking the opportunity to stay with that routine, because it's so easy to get out of the routine when something's wrong. I learned that decades before we started Roverszem. Because I when I hurt my knee, it was eight to 10 weeks before I was theoretically allowed to go back to the gym. I wasn't able to do anything with that leg. But I didn't quit going to the gym. I just didn't do anything with that leg. Because I knew I could not quit the habit that it was so hard for me to get into it that I knew if I took off 10 weeks, I would be done. I would have to start from scratch. So I just continued doing what I could a legging immobilizer. I looked very funny. But I still was able to use my upper body. I did what I could with my other leg. You want to stay in motion. And that's the most important thing.

Kim Gibbs
I did the same thing after my knee surgery. I wasn't teaching yet. But I participated in classes. I still had my mobilizer on and I laid there on the ground and someone had to help me up of course, I was doing core work. Yeah, I could still move my core I could still do crunches and certain movements and stuff. I couldn't do single leg bridges and other things. But I would just continue to do core work while everybody else around me was doing squats or whatever. Yeah, right, exactly. And so

Unknown Speaker
So the bottom line The reason we have started this podcast is we want to provide you with techniques with tips with inspiration with things to help you move and feel better. Later this week I'm going to be recording an episode on stretching stronger, what we call our secret weapon, our StretchPro system. I'm going to cover that and cover the techniques a little bit and tell you how you can utilize that in your life. I'm sure Peggy and Kim have some amazing subjects are going to come up with. One of the beauties of a podcast is we're not going to have a fixed time, like say every Friday at 10am, we're going to release this podcast. Number one, there's no time we could pick that would would work well for everybody. So we're doing the three of us is when we have something, when we have a thought that we want to convey to you, something we want to share with you, something we know that will help you, we can jump on like I love to do it while I'm driving my my biggest time of inspiration is when I'm driving and in the past I've often not been able to share because by the time I get to wherever I'm going I forget what I wanted to talk about. I've got a recorder on my phone.

Peggy Stevens
and just know that he's doing it safely. You know he's not taking his hands off the wheels. He's got it all set up.

Dave Stevens
Voice activated. Yep. So We're going to share with you we're going to share in this podcast we're not going to charge a dime for this podcast. We hope that you find some interests and would like a little bit of the comradery the community that RiversZen brings. We have full online offerings, we have in studio offerings in Astoria Oregon and Ilwaco Washington if you're in the area. But it's all about helping you and helping you as a community to move better, and stay healthy. I mean, that's the bottom line because as we get older Peggy just turned 70, I'm 68, Kim is younger than that considerably. But you know, I was thinking about Kim's 38 I but

are you 38 or 37?

I knew you were I knew you're an even number of decades younger than me.

Kim Gibbs
It's okay. I'm okay with aging. So it's all good.

Dave Stevens
Well, you know, I think what's really cool is a lot of people are approaching their 70s and, and you know, we've heard some people lately saying these kind of things that they they, they just they're they can't do this, they can't do that because they're 70 they're 71 they're 68 they're 57 and you know, I'm just getting old enough to watch but you know what you don't, I'm sorry, you do not maybe you're a little wiser and you're not going to do some things like me going headfirst into second base or into the catcher and breaking things. Cuz I know I know it's gonna hurt but that's no different than I was in 30 I'm just smarter than I was when I was 30 it's not because I'm 68 I'm actually in better shape at 68 than I was when I was 30.

Kim Gibbs
So if you did decide to do that, you do know how to stretch it out after so you know, I

Dave Stevens
do know how to fix myself. It still hurts, I mean you know if I have a 300 pound catcher land on top of me because I'm trying to take him out. I had to get the home plate. Which Why would I do that? In the heat of the moment? Of course I do it What am I thinking? But yeah, so, we want to provide you with the tools you need to to I keep saying the same thing you know, it's funny for years we've tried to refine our slogan refine or slotan and to me it always comes down to real people fitness to help you to move well stay healthy and be happy the rest of your life and I guarantee you we can help you do that and

Peggy Stevens
What we need from you is your input. Yes, I mean, what are you looking for? What are your unique issues that you know, we certainly haven't heard everything and we've heard a lot of of consistent issues from a lot of people but

Kim Gibbs
please don't be shy because we have heard so much.

Dave Stevens
Yes. often you've got an issue we've already dealt with over the years either with ourselves or with other people. So please reach out and they'll see that I think Yeah, yeah, the other one I was talking about the 70s and 80s but also we have a lot of people in their 30s, 30 seems to be that magic age while some people start realizing that hey, I can't treat my body the way I treated it when I was younger. I think it's kind of cool that we have both perspectives and instructors. We have the 60, 70 year old but we also have the 30 some year old so we can relate to both sides because those seem to be the magic age is that people start going huh and...

Kim Gibbs
I will say that we do have clients that are even younger than that that are complaining that they're already broken yeah yes. Yeah. Which is really sad that you know 22 years old feeling broken already

Dave Stevens
because there are things you can do if I can beat anything in believe that there are things you can do to be healthy and to be fit and to feel good and to move. By fit I don't mean having the ripped six pack and big muscles and all that stuff I mean just to be comfortable in your own skin that's exactly you

Kim Gibbs
know your body is hot regardless if you have a six pack or if you got a six pack of rolls it's still

high. I I try not to do too much but I recently discovered Tick Tock... see I'm really old so I didn't discover Tick Tock when it first came. But there seems to be a thing a lot of these girls that I know they're trying to sell whatever they're selling to guys but they call it dad bonds. And so even if you've got a dad bod your your perfect.

It's true. Dad bought his

Dave Stevens
well dad buys where you got a little spare tire. Maybe

Kim Gibbs
I'm selling a six pack of ABS regardless of what kind of six pack that is. It's good. Yeah. It's true. It is true,

Peggy Stevens
it is true. And even if you've had something that for years you've struggled with, and nothing has been the solution in the past. Give us a try. Yeah, we have helped a lot of people that have pretty much thrown in the towel, because nothing worked. And this solution isn't always a drug or a surgery. I mean, we try, we don't ever say, don't you, you shouldn't do this. But the fact is, you can always start taking a drug. And you can always get a surgery. But for the most part, you if they're hard to undo, you can't undo the surgery. And once you start on a med, a lot of times it's really hard to get off of it. There's so many side effects.

Dave Stevens
And so that's part of what we help people with. We're not going to tell you to not take medications, we're going to tell you to not do a search, we're gonna point out some alternatives that you can try before or maybe some alternatives you can do to get off of meds you're already on. Yeah, so and some warnings. I mean, you know, I'm not going to get into it right now. But the whole idea of this particular podcast was just kind of introduce you to the whole concept, let you know what's coming, I would highly recommend depending on how you're listening to this podcast, either going over to the right hand side of the page or scrolling down to the bottom of the page and subscribe to our email list or notification list. Now you only get an email once a week we're not going to flood in once a week we're going to talk a little bit you'll get a list of what was posted during the week. And what we're anticipating working on the next week. So don't want to flood you I don't think we're going to send out an email with every time we update a podcast because this is our first week and I think this is our sixth podcast so some of us are prolific when we get a mic in front of

Peggy Stevens
us are yes some of us really like microphones and cameras and others of us don't really care

Kim Gibbs
Yeah, not so much.

Peggy Stevens
No Not so much but we will do it but not as eagerly

Kim Gibbs
Yeah, um I would much rather talk to each of you one on one

Peggy Stevens
yes and that is the perfect segue Kim because we want everyone to know that we will do if you have an issue we will be happy to do a personal orientation just to kind of talk about your issues and and address whether you know coming to class is your solution. coming for private one-on-ones and a private one-on-one can look can look like anything it can be a stretch, it can be helping with specific poses, it can be it can be a specific class. So our privates don't have to be a specific formula

Dave Stevens
and we are available for you so just reach out you can send to Peggy@riverszen.com or Kim@riverszen.com

Kim Gibbs
I would really like an email. That's the Punisher at river Zen calm. Oh, we can do that. I'm just saying I feel that would be very fitting. Okay,

Dave Stevens
just for another reference. We've got the ultimate set of tools.

Peggy Stevens
We'll probably have taken care of by the end of the day, and you

Dave Stevens
have to be old to get that reference probably to Yes. I'll give you a little hint. Like Mr. Spicoli. Actually, it's Mr. Hand and spicoli. Yes, yes. So with that. Anything else Miss Peg?

Peggy Stevens
I'm good.

Dave Stevens
Miss Kim.

Kim Gibbs
Nope. That's it.

Dave Stevens
Alrighty, so, tell we talk again, move wel and stay healthy.

be happy and live with passion? rock and roll. Bye bye talk soon. Have a great day. Be sure and subscribe.
